The Story of Shapes of Pōneke

This project originally began as a self-directed design challenge to create a series of icons which represented the natural and cultural qualities of Pōneke Wellington. Then, more recently, I added symbols to the collection which are characteristic Aotearoa New Zealand in a more general sense.

Working as a graphic designer for over a decade, part of my practice has been producing signage and infographics for museums and corporate clients. In this area, symbols need to be universal and clear, which often means that they are quite sterile and lacking in character. For Shapes of Pōneke, I wanted to play with the balance between this style of standardised icons, and more abstract illustrations with personality and a hand-drawn aesthetic.

My cards are available here, as well as being stocked at Unity Books, the Beehive, The Dowse Art Museum and Whirinaki Whare Taonga. Please get in touch for any wholesale enquiries.
